West Virginia upsets Louisville

Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — West Virginia outhustled and outplayed No. 5 Louisville en route to an upset victory yesterday in women's college basketball.

Takisha Granberry scored 27 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to lead the Mountaineers to a surprising 79-70 victory.

West Virginia (13-9, 2-7 Big East) had lost seven of its past nine games and wasn't expected to provide much of a challenge for Louisville (21-3, 8-2).

"We were coming off a disappointing loss to Seton Hall and come here and beat Louisville on their home floor," West Virginia coach Mike Carey said. "That's the frustrating thing. I told the girls, we could've been playing like that all year."

Liz Repella had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Sarah Miles had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers.

"It's exciting," Miles said. "The usual thing is we always get to the end and can't finish. I felt like we finished this time."

All-American Angel McCoughtry led the Cardinals with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Louisville coach Jeff Walz tried a nicer approach than usual at practice leading up to yesterday's game, which led to a bad practice Friday and a bad game, he said.

"That's my fault," he said. "It will not happen again."

No. 1 UCONN 83, Marquette 49: Maya Moore scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the visiting Huskies (23-0, 9-0 Big East) rolled over the Golden Eagles (13-10, 4-5).

No. 8 Baylor 59, No. 18 Kansas State 50: Jessica Morrow scored 17 points as the Lady Bears (19-3, 7-2 Big 12) pulled away late to beat the visiting Wildcats (19-3, 6-3).

No. 21 Iowa State 53, Colorado 47: Nicky Wieben scored 18 points to lead the Cyclones (18-4, 6-2 Big 12) over the host Buffaloes (10-11, 2-7) for the their fifth straight win.

No. 23 Xavier 68, Richmond 55: Jerri Taylor and Tudy Reed each scored 13 points to lead the Musketeers (20-4, 8-0 Atlantic 10) over the Spiders (17-7, 5-4) in Richmond, Va.

No. 24 South Dakota State 52, Western Illinois 31: The Jackrabbits forced 20 turnovers and held the Westerwinds (7-16, 5-7 Summit League) to just 11 points in the second half as visiting South Dakota State (22-2, 11-1) rolled to the win.
