Kamehameha boys topple 'Iolani in ILH

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pouncing on its golden opportunity, Kamehameha took sole possession of first place in the Interscholastic League of Hono-lulu boys basketball standings last night with a 42-36 victory over visiting 'Iolani.

A crowd of about 700 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym watched the Warriors — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 8-1 in ILH play. The defending champion and No. 3-ranked Raiders, playing without key scorers Kainoa Chu and Trevyn Tulonghari, fell to 7-2.

"Every game is a 'must-win,' but this one was big because it puts us in the driver's seat," said Kamehameha senior guard Pi'i Minns, who finished with a game-high 16 points and added five steals, two blocks and one assist. "This was kind of an ugly one, but we gotta take it."

The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead and were up, 17-12, after a relatively slow-paced first half. The pace did not pick up much in the third period but 'Iolani managed to tie it at 22-22 entering the fourth.

Minns then swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6:55 left to give Kamehameha the lead for good at 25-22. The Raiders stayed as close as 31-28 after three free throws by Jarrett Arakawa with 2:39 left, but the Warriors were able to convert a couple of layups and free throws after beating full-court pressure.

"We were finally able to get some easy stuff by beating the full-court press, which we had been trying to do all game," Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said.

Chu, who scored 28 points in an overtime loss to Saint Louis on Jan. 30 before suffering a concussion, will be re-evaluated today, according to his father, Ed.

Tulonghari is expected to sit out at least another week while concentrating on schoolwork.

But 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said regardless of being short-handed, he was not satisfied with his team's play.

"We can't pass the ball without making a turnover," Mugiishi said. "We were terrible."
