Hit-run driver kills elderly pedestrian in 'Aiea
An 83-year-old pedestrian died this morning after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver near the Kam Swap Meet, police said.
The woman was walking uphill near the KFC restaurant around 2:15 a.m. and was partially on Kaonohi Street — but not in a crosswalk — when she was hit by a car that fled the scene, police said.
A witness described the makai-bound car as possibly a white Cadillac or a similar vehicle, police said. The car may have sustained damage to the right front or side, including damage to the right headlight or windshield, police said.
The woman, who lived in the 'Aiea area, was taken in critical condition to a Honolulu trauma center, where she died, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.
Police have opened a felony hit-and-run investigation.
Speed may have been a factor but police said they do not know if alcohol was. They are asking anyone with information to contact police traffic investigators.
The death was Honolulu's 11th traffic fatality of the year, compared to seven by this day last year.
