A bill to address hazards such as overhanging trees or unstable rocks has been introduced at the Legislature and is set to be discussed at a public meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at KEY Project, 47-200 Waihee Road, Room 103, in Kahalu'u.

State Rep. Jessica Wooley, D-47 (Ha'iku, Kahalu'u, La'ie) introduced the measure and wants to discuss it with community members for possible revisions.

Wooley is working with some Kahalu'u residents who said their neighbor, Japanese billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto, has allowed trees on his property and drainage swales to become a potential hazard to neighbors.

Wooley said she hopes House Bill 1713 will address the issue. It allows the state Civil Defense to mitigate such problems.
