MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Wanted: a West Virginia University student passionate about the school, good at cheering and willing to wear buckskin in public. Musket proficiency a plus.
WVU has begun its search for the new Mountaineer mascot to serve during the 2009-2010 school year, with applications available through Friday. The applications have to be turned in by Feb. 13, and then the school will begin interviewing candidates.
Four finalists will compete in a cheer-off March 4 at the men's basketball game against DePaul. The winner will be selected March 7.
Besides attending sporting events, the Mountaineer attends non-athletic events and cares for the mascot's signature mountain rifle.
The current Mountaineer, Michael Squires, was chosen last spring.
