This year's total reverses a three-year downward trend after permit issuance peaked with 13,525 in 2005.
Consumer fireworks may be legally set off from 9 p.m. tonight until 1 a.m. tomorrow, a four-hour window. The Honolulu Fire Department reminds residents that all aerial fireworks are illegal, as well as extremely dangerous.
Illegal fireworks use has been reported around the state in the weeks (in some cases months) leading up to tonight's celebration. The Honolulu Police Department today responded to complaints in the Mililani, Pearl City, and Tantalus areas.
The Waikiki Improvement Association is again sponsoring a New Year's fireworks show tonight off of Waikiki Beach. The show will be visible from all Waikiki beachfront areas as well as other areas of Honolulu.
