Fresh off tough lessons learned at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Punahou opened the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball season yesterday with a 60-22 rout of Maryknoll.

It was the first ILH varsity game held at Maryknoll's sparkling new Clarence T.C. Gymnasium.

Punahou, the defending state runner-up, went 1-3 against elite competition at the Tournament of Champions — regarded as the nation's premier girls basketball tournament. Ten USA Today national champions and 84 state champs have participated in the Tournament of Champions since 1997, according to the event's Web site.

Punahou defeated Buena (Ventura, Calif.), 63-50; and lost to Westbury Christian (Houston), 46-36; Oregon City (Ore.), 68-46; and Tolleson (Ariz.) Union, 50-45.

Oregon City is ranked No. 33 in ESPN Rise's Fab 50.

"We were shell-shocked in the first half, but in the second half we outscored them by one or two points and got it down to 14 before they pulled away at the end," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said of Oregon City. "We grew up a lot, playing championship-level teams. One thing it did was expose our weaknesses and make us focus on the little things more."

After returning Wednesday, Punahou had a short practice Christmas Eve before taking Christmas Day off. The Buffanblu then took their lessons to the court yesterday against Maryknoll, which has moved up to Division I after winning the ILH DII title last season with a 12-0 record.

The Spartans took a 7-6 lead midway through the first period on Ashley Agcaoili's free throw, but the Buffanblu ended the quarter with an 11-2 run and outscored Maryknoll 12-5 in the second period to lead 29-14 at halftime.

Punahou then began the third period with a 14-0 run and led 43-16 heading into the fourth.

Spartans coach Bob Samson estimated the Buffanblu scored 30 points off offensive rebounds and 10 off Maryknoll turnovers.

"We're young (only two seniors) and our girls have to learn how to play at this level," Samson said.

Julia Brand led Punahou with 13 points; freshman guard Khaliya Thompson — a 5-foot-7 transfer from Wheeler Intermediate — and Hailey Maeda, a 5-10 junior who sat out last season after transferring from 'Iolani, each added 12 points for the Buffanblu.

Agcaoili led the Spartans with 13 points.
