Honolulu slips to 28th in ranking of literacy among 75 big cities
Honolulu has slipped in a ranking that measures the literacy of the nation’s 75 largest cities.
It fell to 28th, or six places lower than its 2008 ranking in the study by Central Connecticut State University. Seattle was the most literate of cities surveyed while El Paso, Texas was the least.
The study attempts to measure literacy by looking at six indicators of a well-read city. Honolulu’s ranking in each of these categories was:
• 68th in bookstores per 10,000 population.
• 12th in high school diplomas and four-year college degrees.
• 34.5th (tie) in Web resources.
* 29th in libraries and utilization.
• 33.5th (tie) in newspaper circulation
• 18th in periodicals published.
