Preps: De La Salle beats Crenshaw for CIF Open title

CARSON, Calif. — Terron Ward ran for three touchdowns as De La Salle of Concord rallied for a 28-14 victory over Crenshaw of Los Angeles in the California Interscholastic Federation’s Open Division championship game Saturday night.
Ward gained 161 yards in 22 carries for the Spartans (13-2), who won their second state title in three seasons after being ranked ninth in the state by MaxPreps.com.
Crenshaw (14-1), ranked fifth in the state, took a 14-0 lead in the first 8:50 on DeAnthony Thomas’ 43-yard and 11-yard scoring runs. But Thomas had to be carried off the field after injuring his ankle in the second quarter.
Ward’s first touchdown, a 1-yard dive, tied the score with 1:51 left in the first half. The senior then scored on a 26-yard burst to put the Spartans ahead for good 21-14 with 7:46 left in the third quarter.
Later that quarter, the Cougars drove from their 20-yard line to De La Salle’s 22. But on fourth down, Gregory Ducre stepped out of bounds inches short of a first down after catching Marquis Thompson’s 11-yard pass.
Ward ended the scoring on a 4-yard run with 3:07 to play. The Spartans gained 252 yards on the ground.
Thompson completed 18 of 30 passes for 178 yards but threw two interceptions.
