2 hurt in Waimea Bay crash

Police opened an attempted-murder case after an incident yesterday that ended in a vehicle crash outside Waimea Bay Beach Park and the closure of Kamehameha Highway for about five hours.
The investigation closed the road in both directions, stalling traffic trying to catch the tail end of this week's epic North Shore surf.
The incident began about 10:55 a.m. when officers on speed-enforcement duty spotted a speeding vehicle on Joseph P. Leong Highway in Hale'iwa. Police said the car was later seen in the Waimea Bay Beach Park parking lot and officers tried to stop it.
Police said the driver tried to evade the officers, and his car hit a metal pole and another car in the lot. A female officer was forced to jump out of the way of the car, police said. For that reason, an attempted-murder case was initiated.
The car then hit the beach park sign and a city Handivan on the highway, police said. Police arrested the driver as he climbed out of the car's passenger window.
The driver, a man in his 20s, and the female Handivan driver were taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway between St. Peter and Paul Church and 'Ili'ohu Place while officers investigated the incident. The road was reopened at 4:22 p.m.
Charges against the suspect were pending while he remained at a hospital for treatment.
