Honolulu police have opened an attempted murder case following an incident near Waimea Bay earlier today in which an officer was forced to jump out of the way of a vehicle.
A man was arrested, but remains at a hospital for treatment of injuries related to this case. He has not been charged.
The incident began at about 10:55 a.m. when officers on speed enforcement duty spotted a speeding vehicle on Joseph P. Leong Highway in Haleiwa. Police said the car was later seen in the Waimea Bay Beach Park parking lot and officers attempted to stop it.
But police said the driver tried to evade the officers and his car hit a metal pole and another car in the lot. A female officer was forced to jump out of the way of the car, police said.
The car struck the beach park sign and a city Handivan on the highway, police said. Police were able to catch up to the driver and arrest him as he climbed out of the vehicle’s passenger window.
The suspect, a man in his 20s, and the female Handivan driver, were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway between St. Peter and Paul Church and Iliohu Place while they investigated the incident. The road was reopen at 4:22 p.m., although the entrance to Waimea Bay Beach Park remains closed.
