Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, was hospitalized after taking eight pills at her Manhattan apartment, a law enforcement official said yesterday.
A friend frantically called 911 shortly after noon yesterday from the singer's Greenwich Village apartment saying Joel, 23, had taken several pills, the official told The Associated Press. Officials didn't know what kind she had taken, an official said; it wasn't clear whether she had accidentally overdosed or attempted suicide, the official said.
The official wasn't authorized to publicly disclose the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Joel is hospitalized in stable condition and receiving treatment, a Joel publicist said yesterday. She wouldn't elaborate.
RACY ROCKER GETS SOME ABC AIRTIME
ABC says glam-rocker Adam Lambert will appear and perform on its daytime talk show "The View" on Thursday.
The announcement comes almost two weeks after Lambert's racy performance on ABC's broadcast of the American Music Awards. That led to Lambert getting axed from an appearance on the network's "Good Morning America."
Since then, Lambert, who is openly gay, complained of being dropped from two other upcoming ABC shows.
His taped appearance on "The View" will air a day after he is honored by "View" co-panelist Barbara Walters on her "10 Most Fascinating People of 2009" special. That also airs on ABC.
YOUNG STARS PRAISED FOR CHARITY WORK
Five under-25-year-old stars were lauded yesterday for their philanthropic work.
"High School Musical" actor Corbin Bleu, singer Jesse McCartney, "iCarly" star Miranda Cosgrove, "90210" actress AnnaLynne McCord and "True Jackson" star Keke Palmer were honored for their respective charity work at Variety's third annual Power of Youth event.
Dozens of young celebs from shows like "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and movies such as "Fame" and "The Twilight Saga" series attended the outdoor block party held on the New York street set at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
UNDERWOOD TOUTS 'FAMILY PROGRAMMING'
Country music star Carrie Underwood, who hosts tomorrow's "An All-Star Holiday Special" on Fox, believes such variety shows are just the tonic for the regular TV lineup.
"I think it's really great they're making a comeback because I think it's really good family programming, and nowadays it seems like every show is about, like, murder or police and people shooting at each other," Underwood said.
