Storyteller: ‘Life in the Islands During War’

Advertiser Staff

Local storyteller Nyla Fujii-Babb this weekend will share a collection of stories about Hawaii’s island families coping with war “local” style during an event titled “ Homefront Hawaii: Life in the Islands During War-times.”
The hour-long event is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Kapolei Public Library.
Pearl Harbor was the only place on American soil where American civilians died of “friendly fire” and where a majority of the civilians were considered enemy aliens. The Vietnam War saw families divided. While some sons went to war, others burned draft cards and protested at the University of Hawaii.
Sing the songs and remember Hawaii in the decades of the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s. This one-hour event is sponsored by the University of Hawaii Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program and the Friends of the Library, Kapolei. Recommended for all ages. For more information, call 693-7050.
