Hawaii residents warned of flu-related 'phishing' scam

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Health Department officials today are warning people to ignore an email “phishing scam” that asks them to create a profile with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s web site.

The CDC has received reports of fraudulent emails referencing a CDC sponsored State Vaccination Program for H1N1. The messages request that users create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the CDC.gov web site.
But following the links on the email could expose users to a “malicious code” that could be installed on their computers, health officials said.
The CDC urges computer users to:
• Not open or respond to unsolicited email messages.
• Not click links on emails from unknown senders.
• Use caution when entering personal information online.
• Update anti-virus, spyware, firewall, and anti-spam software regularly.
