NEW YORK — Robinson Cano knows all about his struggles with runners in scoring position.
"You see the statistics up on the board," he said. "I want to get better."
Cano did all right in the 10th inning last night, hitting a three-run homer with two outs to give the New York Yankees a 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.
"I was looking for something right in the middle and thank God I came through in that situation," he said.
Cano hit a 2-2 pitch from Randy Williams (0-1) into New York's bullpen in right-center. Williams retired the first two batters he faced before walking Hideki Matsui and Nick Swisher on four pitches apiece to set up Cano.
"I was trying to feel for my pitches a little bit and that's not the situation where you want to have to do that," Williams said.
Brian Bruney (4-0) worked a perfect 10th inning for the win. Cano was batting just .176 with two outs and runners in scoring position this season before his clutch hit.
"Robby hit a bullet," manager Joe Girardi said. "The wind wasn't going to hold that one up."
Derek Jeter hit his second leadoff homer this week and Johnny Damon also connected for AL East-leading New York.
Mark Buehrle gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings for the White Sox but remained winless in seven starts since his perfect game against Tampa Bay on July 23.
RED SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 5
J.D. Drew had two hits, including an eighth-inning double that put David Ortiz in position to score the tiebreaking run, and host Boston rallied from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits to take Josh Beckett off the hook and beat Toronto.
ORIOLES 13, INDIANS 4
Rookie Matt Wieters had three hits and a career-high four RBIs, Nick Markakis and Felix Pie homered, and Jason Berken (4-11) allowed two runs, five hits and three walks in five innings to help host Baltimore cruise past Cleveland.
TWINS 3, RANGERS 2
Rookie Brian Duensing (2-1) allowed a run and three hits, striking out eight in seven innings, and Joe Mauer, Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer each drove in runs to lead host Minnesota over Texas.
TIGERS 6, RAYS 2
Brandon Inge homered and scored twice, and rookie Rick Porcello (11-8) won for the first time since Aug. 6, allowing one run on four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings as host Detroit beat Tampa Bay.
MARINERS 6, ROYALS 3
Fill-in Josh Wilson had his first three-RBI game in more than two years, former Royal Mike Sweeney scored two runs, and Felix Hernandez (13-5) allowed three runs and five hits in seven inning to lead host Seattle over Kansas City.
ANGELS 11, ATHLETICS 7
Kendry Morales went 5 for 5 with two homers and six RBIs, and host Los Angeles used a seven-run surge in the seventh inning to rally past Oakland.
