'Shiho-giri' performance at Valley of the Temples

    Families who come to pay respects to family members inurned at the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park Byodo-In Temple columbarium or scattering garden today will witness the ancient Japanese martial art of naginata.

    The ceremonial "Shiho-giri" performance, using a 400-year-old spear, is intended to show respect to departed souls.

    Performing are students of sensei Hanae Miura, of the Jiki-Shinkage-ryu School of Naginata.

    The performance is scheduled, weather permitting, 2 to 2:45 p.m., today.

    Also welcome are families who have recently lost loved ones, as well as members of the public.

    Regular park admission prices prevail: $3, adult; $2, senior; $1, child.

    LECTURE FEATURES LANTERN SLIDES FROM CENTRAL UNION

    Central Union Church's rare collection of lantern slides will be showcased Tuesday at a lecture at Mission Houses Museum.

    Presenting images of early 20th century Honolulu will be Suzanne Case, the church's archivist/historian.

    The noon presentation is part of the museum's Historic Bites lecture series.

    Attendees may bring a brown-bag lunch or eat at the museum's Cafe and Tea Parlor.

    HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL LU'AU HONORS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

    The 50th Anniversary Lu'au of Holy Trinity Catholic School will be 3 to 7 p.m., Sept. 27 at its Kuli'ou'ou location: pupu/visiting, 3 to 4 p.m.; food, 4 to 6 p.m., and entertainment, 3 to 7 p.m.

    Tickets (limited to 400) are $20 adults and $12 children (ages 6-12) and are available after all Masses and at the school office. Part of the cost is tax deductible.

    Carpooling is suggested. A shuttle from an off-site parking area will be announced.

    Also scheduled is a 50th anniversary school Mass at 7:45 a.m. Sept. 4. Students, parishioners, alumni, friends and family, and the public are invited.
