Hawai'i's four county mayors will join state and county tourism officials next week for a marketing campaign in Los Angeles to promote Hawai'i as a visitor destination.
The promotional campaign, titled "Hawai'i: A Thousand Reasons to Smile," was organized by the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau. Events in Los Angeles will begin Tuesday.
The Western U.S. is the largest single market for Hawai'i's visitor industry, accounting for about 45 percent of all the tourists that come to the Islands.
During the Los Angeles visit, HVCB officials will meet with representatives from more than 60 online and traditional media.
Led by Hawai'i's four county mayors — Bernard Carvalho Jr. of Kaua'i, Mufi Hannemann of Honolulu, Charmaine Tavares of Maui and William Kenoi of the Big Island — HVCB will host two media events at the W Los Angeles-Westwood Tuesday and Wednesday.
HVCB's media outreach will continue on Thursday with an event for food writers co-hosted by Starwood Hawaii and www.ShareYourTable.com at Deliciously Green by Design in Los Angeles.
"This is a big, concentrated campaign in our foremost market with a view towards stimulating travel to Hawai'i as we approach the fall and winter seasons," said John Monahan, HVCB's president and chief executive officer.
Chef Jon Matsubara of Azure at The Royal Hawaiian will prepare the Hawai'i-inspired menu, while Grammy Award-winning musician George Kahumoku will perform.
The events also will offer media members "talk story" sessions with local culinary expert and author Joan Namkoong, cultural specialist Celine Piilani Nelsen and Kahumoku.
"For the first time, all Hawai'i's mayors are working together to support a major visitor industry event," Hannemann said.
"We all know how important the industry is to our economy, and we know that we are more effective leaders when we work together toward a common goal.
Hannemann participated in the debut of HVCB's campaign in San Francisco earlier this year with entertainer Willie K.
Tavares said the show of support from Hawai'i's mayors is an important part of efforts to spur the lagging tourism industry.
"It's important to be active in promoting our main economic engine, tourism," Tavares said. "This is a unique opportunity to help showcase our wonderful state and each of our beautiful islands. Having all four of Hawai'i's mayors in a united effort speaks volumes about how important tourism is to our economic recovery."
