Victims of ‘Ewa Beach, Kualoa accidents identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has identified two people killed in traffic accidents on O'ahu Friday.

Derek Baxter, 23, a crewman aboard the Pearl Harbor-based submarine USS Chicago, was killed about 5:40 p.m. when a truck hit the bicycle he was riding near Kualoa Ranch in Windward O'ahu.

Police said the truck was traveling toward Kahuku when the 37-year-old driver fell asleep and nearly hit three other vehicles before veering into the oncoming lane, hitting Baxter.

In an earlier accident Aug. 21, pedestrian Pelagia Igne, 68, of 'Ewa Beach, was killed by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed Fort Weaver Road at Makule Road about 5:30 a.m.

Police were still looking for the male driver of a light-colored van believed to have been involved in the accident.
