33 Guam schools closing for two days after meal-service contract rejected

Associated Press

HAGATNA, Guam — Guam’s Department of Education is closing 33 public schools for two days after the attorney general rejected its contract with a meal service provider.
Superintendent Nerissa Bretania Underwood says a flawed contract with King’s Restaurants and budget shortfalls means the schools won’t be able to serve meals for the rest of the week. That prompted officials to shutter the schools Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the Education Department, 13,000 students eat meals provided at the 33 schools.
The attorney general says it rejected the King’s Restaurants contract Tuesday because of procedural errors.
An attorney for the Education Department says Gov. Felix Camacho has declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to find a new meal service vendor quickly while contract procedures are corrected.
