The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team received a first-hand lesson in first-class soccer as No. 2 Stanford handed it a 6-2 loss last night.

A crowd of 1,200 saw the finale of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka 'Oi Tournament at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

"They are streaks ahead of anything we've seen," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "It was picturesque, the way they play. Really, really beautiful. We've been trying to work on things, but that's as good as an offense gets. The diagonal cutting runs, the crosses, the control on the ball. Think about anything positive in soccer, and you saw it here today."

Stanford, which dominated the shots on goal 29-4, scored in the fifth minute on a goal by forward Kelley O'Hara. Christen Press flicked the ball over the UH defense. O'Hara made a run to collect the ball inside the 18-yard box and shot it past goalkeeper Kristina Ehrett.

Cardinal freshman forward Courtney Verloo scored in the 39th minute on an assist from midfielder Mariah Nogueira, whose header led Verloo to the right, top corner of the 18-yard box. Verloo put it away inside the box.

Stanford midfielder Teresa Noyola scored in the 41st minute from inside the 18-yard box after forward Lindsay Taylor chipped a ball to her. Noyola finished with a left-footed shot into the far right corner of the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Rachel Domingo scored Hawai'i's first goal of the season in the 54th minute. Forward Britta Bourne's pass found freshman midfielder Skye Shimabukuro on the left side of the 18-yard box and Shimabukuro sent a low cross in front of the goal to Domingo, whose shot skirted past goalkeeper Kira Maker.

"We practiced that in practice, crossing runs to get to the goal, and Britta dummied it and we knew exactly what we were doing," Domingo said. "That was a beautiful ball by Skye.

"It really builds our confidence and keeps you going. It felt good."

Press put the Cardinal back up by three after taking the ball herself into the 18-yard box and driving a low shot into the left side of the goal in the 69th minute.

O'Hara made it 5-1 after receiving a pass from Verloo that split two defenders in the 71st minute, and two minutes later Press scored again on a header from Verloo into the 18-yard box.

Bourne scored UH's second goal on an assist from senior Ambree Ako in the 81st minute after feeding Ako a pass down the right side. Ako dribbled to the near, right post and slotted a ball back to Bourne in front of the goal and finished the play.

"I'm truly grateful we scored two good goals," Tenzing said. "Where we pushed it out and crosses came in both times, one from the left and one from the right. Those are wonderful goals and I'm appreciative of that. There aren't many teams that scored goals against them (last year)."

The Rainbow Wahine next play Hawai'i Pacific in the Outrigger Hotels Hawai'i College Soccer Showcase Sunday at 5 p.m.
