Golf: Southern Hills seeks to stop protesters at U.S. Amateur

Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. — Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa is seeking a temporary restraining order against a union it says plans to disrupt the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship.

The country club alleges in court documents the Arkansas Regional Council of Carpenters organized about 30 protesters Friday near the golf course to use "loud chants and cheers" in support of workers' rights.

A hearing on the club's petition is set for Monday at 1:30 p.m.

The union accuses a member of the club of giving substandard pay and benefits to his employees.

Court documents show the country club itself has no carpentry work being done.

Practice rounds for the U.S. Amateur began Saturday and the tournament will run through Aug. 30.

Honolulu's Alex Ching and Sam Cyr of Makawao, Maui, are scheduled to play in the tournament.
