Outrigger dominates Kailua Bay men's long distance canoe race

Advertiser Staff

The winning streak continued for the Outrigger Canoe Club men today.

Outrigger dominated the Kailua Bay Men's Iron Challenge race today, with its first crew placing first overall and its second crew placing second.

The Outrigger first crew won the 14.5-mile race with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 12 seconds. Members of the crew were Scott Gamble, Craig Gamble, Mike Kane, Deane Salter, Kapono Brown and Jimmy Austin.

Outrigger's second crew came in next at 2:04:08. Kailua placed third in 2:04:54, and Lanikai was fourth in 2:08:21.

Outrigger has won all three long-distance races it has entered this month.

The crews faced challenging conditions, including fierce onshore winds and 4- to 6-foot wind swells. The course traversed off Windward O'ahu, with the start and finish at Kailua Beach.

The race followed an "iron" format, meaning there were no relief changes for the six paddlers in the canoe.

The women's crews will race tomorrow in the Dad Center Long Distance Race. It will start at Kailua Beach around 8:30 a.m. and finish at the Outrigger Canoe Club around 11:30 a.m.
