Vote for your favorite 'Canstruction'

Advertiser staff

Teams of local architects, design and engineering professionals put together "Canstructions" Saturday at Pearlridge Center, where they will remain on display until Aug. 29 so viewers can pick their favorites for the People's Choice Award.

Canstruction, a benefit for the foodbank, has been the largest single day promotion, donating 132,000 pounds of food over the past three years. In addition to the canned goods used to build the sculptures, the public is encouraged to bring more — one can equals one vote.

The jurors have already handed out some honors, announcing Saturday the winners in the following categories:

• Jurors’ Favorite: “Pound Out Hunger” [poi pounder] by Fung Associates

• Structural Integrity: “CAN You Say Shaka Braddah?” [shaka sign] by KYA Design Group

• Best Use of Labels: “The Big Aloha Shirts” [aloha shirt] by WATG

• Best Meal: “USS Arizona Memorial – A Canstruction® Tribute” by Belt Collins

• Honorable Mention: “Shave Ice” by InSynergy Engineering

After the People's Choice Award is determined, it'll be time for "Decanstruction," and dontions will be brought to the foodbank Aug. 30.

These structures will compete at the national level with winners from over 130 local Canstruction® competitions across the U.S. and Canada this year – as well as in Australia, New Zealand and Columbia.
