Felicia continues to weaken, tropical storm watch in effect for Big Isle, Maui

Advertiser Staff

Hurricane Felicia continues to weaken and now has maximum sustained wind speeds of 85 mph, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in a 5 p.m. update.

The center has issued a tropical storm watch for the Big Island and Maui County, meaning that tropical storm conditions are possible in the designated areas, generally within the next 48 hours.
The center said the watch could extend to other islands later tonight.
Felicia, a Category 1 hurricane that could be downgraded to tropical storm late tonight or tomorrow, is expected to reach the Big Island on Monday.
At 11 a.m., an Air Force reconnaissance aicraft located Felicia about 845 miles east of Hilo and about 1,025 miles east of Honolulu. Felicia is moving west at about 15 mph.
Even if it weakens as expected, the storm could still bring heavy rains, high surf and possible flash flooding Monday through Wednesday, forecasters have said.
