Shaq isn’t first NBA star to be courted by TV

NBA star Shaquille O’Neal appears on his second reality show when “Shaq Vs.” debuts Aug. 18 on ABC. In this series, O’Neal will compete against other top athletes — such as swimmer Michael Phelps and baseball’s Albert Pujols — in their own sports. (In 2007, he hosted “Shaq’s Big Challenge,” on which he encouraged overweight kids to lose weight.)
Here are five other NBA stars who have made TV appearances beyond the court.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — The king of the Sky Hook has guested on many sitcoms including “Martin,” “Amen” and “Diff’rent Strokes.”
Julius Erving — The guy the Nets should have never traded away provided the voice of a caller to Dr. Frasier Crane on a 1996 “Frasier” episode. The gimmick was that Frasier was subbing as a sports-talk host, a subject he knew absolutely nothing about.
Patrick Ewing — The Knicks’ one-time captain has appeared as himself in such sitcoms as “Spin City,” “Herman’s Head,” “Mad About You” and “Webster.”
Magic Johnson — The Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar tried his hand hosting a 1998 Fox late-night talk show. “The Magic Hour” was canceled after two months because of poor ratings.
Dennis Rodman — The inked-up, mega-pierced Worm has become a reality-TV staple, embarrassing himself on “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling” and “The Celebrity Mole” (which he won).
