A Kane'ohe man was critically injured Thursday night after the moped he was riding was hit by a pickup truck in Kailua.

Police said both the moped operator and the driver of the truck may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The crash took place on Maluniu Avenue, just south of Manono Street, at about 10:25 p.m.

The moped was turning right from Manono Street onto Maluniu Avenue when it crossed into oncoming traffic and was hit by the truck.

The moped's operator, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the vehicle.

City paramedics took the 41-year-old man to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the truck, a 31-year-old Kailua man, appeared to be intoxicated and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

LANA WEAKENING SOUTH OF ISLANDS

Tropical Storm Lana continued to weaken yesterday and was expected to pass far to the south of Hawai'i.

At 5 p.m. yesterday, the National Weather Serice reported that Lana was 550 miles southeast of Hilo, moving west at 16 mph.

Maximum sustained winds were near 50 mph, but the storm was expected to diminish today and tomorrow, the weather service said.

Tropical strom-force winds extended about 45 miles from the storm's center.

PUBLIC'S HELP SOUGHT IN ASSAULT AT MALL

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are asking for the public's help in finding a man who allegedly touched a woman inappropriately in the parking lot of Ala Moana Center.

The woman, who was loading the trunk of her car about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18, was approached from behind by a man she did not know, police said.

The man asked if she needed help, then reached under her skirt, police said. The woman screamed and called for security. The man was last seen running toward the Barnes & Noble bookstore.

The man is described as being in his 30s, about 5 feet 8 and 160 pounds, with black, spiked hair. He was wearing a blue and white aloha shirt, black pants and thin wire-frame glasses.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300, or *CRIME on a cell phone.
