Consumers redeemed nearly four out of five HI-5¢ beverage containers in the fiscal year ending June 30, a significant jump from the year before, the state announced yesterday.
The redemption rate increased from 72 percent in 2007-08 to 79 percent in 2008-09, the state said.
The rate increased even as total sales of beverages declined, the state said.
The state Health Department said the 6 cents per container fee will stay the same, despite state law that authorizes a fee hike to 6 1/2 cents if the redemption rate exceeds 70 percent.
