UH women take second; earn national sailing spot

Hawai'i finished in second place at the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Women's Championship last weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Stanford captured the regatta and joined the Rainbow Wahine and third-place UC Irvine as automatic qualifiers for next month's Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championship.
Over the 16 races, Stanford totaled 29 points, UH 45 and UC Irvine 73.
Hawai'i clinched its 10th national berth in the past 12 years. It won the 2001 national title.
The Rainbow Wahine go to San Francisco for this year's nationals, May 26 to 28. The coed sailing team clinched a bid to the ICSA dinghy national semifinals earlier this month and travel to Boston this week.
BASEBALL
HIROTA, LEE HONORED
Hawai'i Pacific senior Cheynne Hirota earned Pacific West Baseball Player of the Week honors, announced yesterday by the conference office.
Also, Hawai'i-Hilo sophomore pitcher Kekoa Lee was selected PacWest Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Hirota, a Waiakea alum, batted .600 (12 for 20) with six runs scored, two doubles, and two home runs from April 20-26. He also drove in 15 runs and had a 1.000 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage.
Lee, Moanalua alum, recorded a seven-inning, complete-game 8-2 victory over HPU in which he allowed two hits and no earned runs. He struck out seven, issued two walks and one extra-base hit.
SOFTBALL
WARACKA HONORED
Hawai'i-Hilo freshman pitcher Amber Waracka earned Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
Waracka, a Kamehameha Schools alum, posted a 2-0 record by tossing a pair of complete-game victories over Chaminade.
She allowed no earned runs and tossed one shutout while scattering 10 hits over 14 innings.
