Buddhist monk's escape, tango at film events

Makoto Sasa's 2008 film "Fire Under the Snow" will be screened tomorrow afternoon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising.

The documentary moves back and forth through the life of Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk since childhood, who was arrested by the Chinese communist army in 1957 for peaceful demonstration and refusing to denounce his apolitical teacher as an Indian spy. Imprisoned for 33 years, the monk was tortured, starved and sentenced to hard labor while his culture was destroyed under Chinese occupation. He eventually escaped Tibet, met the Dalai Lama and is currently an activist living in exile.

The 75-minute film will be shown at 3 p.m. in the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Tibetan national Lama Wangchuk. Admission is $10.

At 5 p.m., the 1994 film "Tango, Our Dance," directed by Jorge Zanada of Argentina, will be shown, followed by a performance by George Garcia and his group Isla Tango. Admission is $5, with a $2 discount for UH students.
