Ghialana Borges, a Kahuku High School senior, has won the grand prize at the 2009 Congressional Art Contest "Kaha Kii: An Artistic Discovery."
The announcement was made Monday by U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono.
Borges' winning work, a photograph titled "Reflections," will represent Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District on display in Washington, D.C.
A total of 148 students from Kauai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and the Big Island entered the contest.
Two Baldwin High students were runners-up — senior Tanner Morin second for her charcoal drawing "Tiny Inspiration" and sophomore Lori Nishikawa third for her scratchboard work "What to Do."
Starting in June, Borges will have her artwork displayed along a highly visited corridor that leads to the U.S. Capitol Building, side-by-side with winning pieces of art representing all 435 congressional districts.
Borges has also earned a round-trip visit to Washington, D.C., along with her art teacher, Sherril Balbirona, where they will participate in a dedication ceremony on June 24.
Morin will have her work displayed in Hirono's Washington office over the next year. Nishikawa's work will hang in the congresswoman's Honolulu office during that same period.
