No. 3 Arizona State blasts No. 20 UH, 17-2

Jordan Swagerty pitched seven strong innings and No. 3 Arizona State demolished No. 20 Hawai'i, 17-2, today, in a non-conference game at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark in Tempe, Ariz.

Swagerty (1-1) allowed a run and five hits with six strikeouts for the Sun Devils (29-8). He was followed by four relievers, including Punahou graduate Jeeter Ishida, who allowed a hit and a walk before getting the final out of the game.

Alex Capaul (1-2) gave up two runs in one-plus innings for the Rainbows (24-14), who used seven relievers for starter Connor Little, who pitched three perfect innings.

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Vinnie Catricala led off with a single to left and scored on Kevin Macdonald's double to left-center. Macdonald went to third when Kolten Wong grounded out to first. Swagerty then struck out Landon Hernandez and Jeffrey Van Doornum to strand the runner at third.

The Sun Devils scored three in the fifth to take the lead. Kole Calhoun led off with a walk and stole second. After a 2-0 count on Jared McDonald, Alex Capaul was lifted for Harrison Kuroda, who threw two balls for a walk charged against Capaul. The runners advanced on Raoul Torrez's sacrifice. Zach MacPhee's two-run single to left put ASU ahead, 2-1. MacPhee took third on Kuroda's pick-off throwing error to first. Kuroda was pulled for Jesse Moore. With the infield drawn in, MacPhee scored on Drew Maggi's sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1. Jason Kipnis reached first when first baseman Macdonald dropped a throw from second baseman Morford for an error. Carlos Ramirez walked to put runners at first and second. Moore struck out Newman to end the inning.

Arizona State sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run seventh. Maggi led off with a triple to right off Josh Slaats. With the infield drawn in, Maggi scored on Kipnis' sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-1. Ramirez homered to right, making it 5-1. Newman doubled to center. Slaats was pulled for Lenny Linsky. Johnny Ruettiger got a pinch-hit RBI double to make it 6-1. Calhoun walked. McDonald triple to right-center to score two, increasing ASU's lead to 8-1. McDonald scored when Torrez grounded out to the pitcher. MacPhee singled to right and Maggi walked. The runners advanced on a wild pitch. They advanced again on another wild pitch to make it 10-1.

Riccio Torrez's three-run homer off Alex Myers in the eighth made it 13-1. MacPhee's two-run homer made it 15-1. Kipnis also hit a two-run home run to make it 17-1.
