A dozen new horseshoe pitching courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park in Keaukaha will be named for Keaukaha-born David K. Calles Sr. in ceremonies set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the courts, according to a Hawaii County news release.

Calles, a lifelong sportsman, became interested in horseshoe pitching following the death of his wife in 2000, and was instrumental in working with the county Department of Parks and Recreation on the construction of 12 new nationally sanctioned horseshoe courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park in 2002, the news release said.

Calles, 82, now spends most of his time at the park, maintaining the courts and socializing with friends. In his honor, the courts officially will be named "Uncle David K. Calles Sr. Horseshoe Courts" pursuant to a resolution adopted by the Hawai'i County Council in September 2008.

The public is welcome to attend the dedication ceremony. A reception with refreshments will follow. An officially sanctioned horseshoe tournament with participants from throughout the state is scheduled at 1 p.m.
