Dean Shimamoto has been named boys basketball head coach at 'Iolani School, co-athletic director Eddie Maruyama told The Advertiser Sunday night.
Shimamoto — a longtime assistant and 1994 'Iolani graduate — will replace Mark Mugiishi, who retired two weeks ago after 20 largely successful seasons at the helm. Under Mugiishi, the Raiders won seven state championships (including five straight from 2002 through 2006) and 10 Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles (including six straight from 2001 through 2006).
Maruyama said Adam Wong, another longtime assistant and Shimamoto's classmate, will remain on staff and Mugiishi will serve as a "consultant."
Shimamoto and Wong, who both played on 'Iolani's 1994 state championship team, had taken on more of the practice and summer league duties in the past couple years.
Mugiishi, a practicing surgeon and director of surgery at Kuakini Medical Center, stepped down as head coach after citing added work and community responsibilities.
