San Francisco artist to create art in The Contemporary Museum gardens

Advertiser staff

This summer, Contemporary Museum Artist in Residence Michael Arcega will create a site-specific project for The Contemporary Museum in Makiki.

The work will be on exhibit throughout the museum's gardens from July 11 through October 25, 2009.

This work entitled "Overlooks," will consist of several arboreal structures utilizing the monkey pod trees on the Makiki Heights property.

This installation is another in a series of artist in residence projects TCM has sponsored. This artist in residence project is made possible through a grant from the Nimoy Foundation. The Nimoy Foundation was established in 2003 by actor Leonard Nimoy to encourage, recognize, and support the work of artists.

As with Arcega's previous works, "Overlooks" is influenced by language and wordplay. The title is meant to read as both a physical and a conceptual position — playing on multiple meanings simultaneously. The form is then open to interpretation from the viewers points of view.

Arcega will develop three monkey pod trees on the Museum site with structures based on tent architecture connected by a network of ropes. The work will punctuate the landscape with colorful shapes and lines that connect the trees — drawing on the canopies and sky.

All three arboreal groupings will be seen from the viewing green near the entrance of the museum. The composition will surround the viewers as they look skyward.

The artist will be in residence at TCM June 23 through July 14. TCM visitors are invited to watch him at work in the gardens while he creates the installation.

A schedule will be published at TCM's website, www.tcmhi.org, with the dates and times Arcega will be working on the installation in public view.

Arcega is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture and installations. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and is currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts at Stanford University. He resides in San Francisco, California.
