LOS ANGELES — Orlando Hudson grinned like a Little Leaguer as he held up a keepsake ball with his rare accomplishment written in black ink on it.

Hudson impressed fans of his new team by hitting for the cycle, Andre Ethier drove in four runs with a pair of homers and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Randy Johnson and the San Francisco Giants, 11-1, to win their home opener yesterday.

"Dodger fans can't expect this every day," said Hudson, who agreed to a free-agent deal in February after three seasons in Arizona. "The cycle is very hard. First of all, getting a hit is hard."

Johnson, Hudson's former teammate in Arizona, lost at Dodger Stadium for the first time in his 22-year career, falling to 7-1 in just his second start in Los Angeles since 2004. He was denied his 296th career victory, although the 45-year-old left-hander earned his 4,800th strikeout in the third inning against James Loney.

Hudson completed the majors' first cycle since Sept. 1, 2008, with a sixth-inning triple off Brandon Medders.

Hudson singled in the first, homered in the third and doubled in the fourth — all off Johnson (0-2).

Chad Billingsley (2-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked none.

PADRES 6, METS 5:

Their new home was gorgeous. The Mets looked lost. Jody Gerut christened Citi Field with a leadoff homer, Adrian Gonzalez also connected and visiting San Diego spoiled New York's first regular-season game in its new ballpark. Gerut's shot off Mike Pelfrey marked the first time in history that the first batter homered in a regular-season opener at a major league ballpark, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

CUBS 4, ROCKIES 0:

Ted Lilly (2-0) held Colorado hitless for 6 2/3 innings on a raw day at Wrigley Field and Chicago won its home opener by holding the Rockies to one hit. Garrett Atkins grounded a clean single between shortstop and third on a 1-0 pitch in the seventh to end Lilly's no-hit bid.

PIRATES 7, ASTROS 0:

Zach Duke limited the Astros to four hits in his third career shutout and Adam LaRoche homered during a five-run third inning for host Pittsburgh. Duke (2-0) struck out five and walked two while throwing 120 pitches.

CARDINALS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1:

Brian Barden broke a tie in the eighth with his first career home run, Albert Pujols also homered and visiting St. Louis won its fifth straight. St. Louis' Todd Wellemeyer (1-1) went seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out four.

REDS 7, BREWERS 6:

Edwin Encarnacion hit a towering grand slam to cap a six-run rally with two outs in the third inning, and visiting Cincinnati beat Milwaukee. Jay Bruce also hit his first homer of the year as the Reds overcame a four-run deficit.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RAYS 15, YANKEES 5:

Tampa Bay raised its first division and league championship banners in franchise history, then went out and played like a team capable of getting back to the postseason. Carlos Pena hit a second-inning grand slam and drove in six runs, helping Scott Kazmir (2-0) beat New York in the home opener for the AL champions. Kazmir allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

WHITE SOX 10, TIGERS 6:

Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko reached 300 career homers with consecutive drives in the second inning off Zach Miner (1-1) for visiting Chicago. Carlos Quentin went 4 for 4 with two homers and four RBIs for the White Sox. Dye went 3 for 5, and Konerko finished with four hits and three RBIs.

BLUE JAYS 8, TWINS 6:

ORIOLES 10, RANGERS 9:

Aubrey Huff went 4 for 5 with three of visiting Baltimore's seven RBI singles in a win over Texas. Baltimore went ahead to stay with five consecutive run-producing hits in the fourth that made it 7-4.
