"Protect, Detect, Report" is the theme of a conference this month designed to provide seniors with advice to protect against fraud.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 25 at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The sponsors are the state Executive Office on Aging and Senior Medicare Patrol Hawai'i, in collaboration with the city's Elderly Affairs Division.

The conference will provide tips to protect elders from fraud, information about how to detect different types of fraud and advice on how and to whom to report fraud.

Participants include several state, county and federal agencies, as well as community organizations. Funding for the conference is provided by the U.S. Administration on Aging.

The exploitation of seniors in fraudulent healthcare and financial schemes will be the focus of the conference. Featured keynote speakers are Mary Twomey, co-director of the Center of Excellence in Elder Abuse and Neglect at the University of California at Irvine and Kimo Alameda, director of the Office of Multicultural Services, Adult Mental Health Division, Hawai'i Health Department.
