Radford girls end Mililani's reign

MILILANI — Radford snapped Mililani's 23-year stronghold on the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls track and field championships last night, edging the Trojans, 118 points to 115, at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Rams had a slim 108-107 lead entering the final race of night — the 4x400 meter relay — then held on when anchor Demetria Woods made up a 10-meter deficit and ended up winning by at least 10 meters at the finish line.

"The girls just stepped up," said Radford coach Liz Patton. "Demetria is a senior, and she's run that race since she was a freshman. (Sophomore) Andrea Hinkle also did a great job in both relays."

Mililani lost out on some points earlier when it was disqualified in the 4x100 relay, but Trojans coach Dane Matsunaga said the Rams' title was well-earned.

"They've got more girls and they have good coaches, and Liz is doing well with that program," Matsunaga said. "We scored it on paper before the meet, and our girls did as much as they could, so it's not really a letdown for us. Radford was just better than us today, and they deserved it."

Mililani junior Courtney Senas won the long jump (16 feet, 4 inches) and triple jump (34-6) despite also playing two softball games earlier in the day.

Wai'anae (73 points) finished third, followed by Leilehua (56), Campbell (43), Waipahu (28), Kapolei (27), 'Aiea (16), Pearl City (13) and Nanakuli (1).

Mililani won the boys title with 99 points, followed by Leilehua (88), Radford (77), Campbell (74), Kapolei (46), Wai'anae (30), 'Aiea and Waipahu (28 each), Pearl City (13), Nanakuli (7) and Waialua (6).

Leilehua senior Bryce Jenkins shattered the meet record in the 3000 meter run, posting a time of 9 minutes, 1 second (hand-timed). The previous hand-timed record was 9:25 by Radford's Andrew Maixner.

"I was aiming for under-9," said Jenkins, a three-time state cross country champion who will attend Idaho State University on a full running scholarship next year. "I was dying (entering the final lap), but I still had a little left. We have a lot of good young runners on this team, and me and another senior, Shannon Cosey, we're trying to set the bar as high as we can for the younger athletes."

In other notable individual performances, 'Aiea senior Jasper Hunt won the discus with a throw of 162 feet, 4 inches, just four inches off the meet record set by Waipahu's Peter Viliamu back in 1988. And Mililani's Fred Culp won the 400 with a time of 50.96 seconds, one of the fastest times posted in Hawai'i this season.
