SAN FRANCISCO — Giants reliever Joe Martinez was hit in the head by Mike Cameron's line drive in the ninth inning, but was able to walk off the field yesterday in San Francisco's 7-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Martinez was conscious and taken to a hospital for a CT scan and evaluation. His forehead was bloody and his right eye was swollen.

"He was bleeding quite a bit," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That ball was smoked. He didn't have a chance."

Martinez was struck near the right temple by Cameron's two-out liner. The 26-year-old pitcher dropped to his knees, and players on both sides winced at the frightening scene.

Team trainers rushed to Martinez's aid. After a few minutes, he was able to walk away with a cloth held to his nose.

Cameron, who was credited with a double, was beside himself. He grimaced, looked away and slowed while running to first base

"You just hope that the young man is all right, that everything is good and that he's safe first and foremost," a shaken Cameron said afterward. "I just hope that he gets a chance to go back on the field again. I couldn't stop shaking. It's kind of a helpless feeling."

CARDINALS 2, PIRATES 1

Chris Carpenter (1-0) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter, leading host St. Louis over Pittsburgh.

Carpenter didn't allow a hit until Ramon Vazquez singled just under the glove of second baseman Skip Schumaker with two outs in the seventh.

REDS 8, METS 6

Joey Votto had a three-run homer and an RBI single off Oliver Perez as host Cincinnati beat New York to salvage the final game of their opening three-game series.

Bronson Arroyo (1-0), who has had trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome, gave up five runs in six innings. Francisco Cordero struck out the side in the ninth.

PADRES 4, DODGERS 3

Adrian Gonzalez's solo homer started a three-run bottom of the eighth inning that carried San Diego over Los Angeles.

Closer Heath Bell got out of a jam in the ninth for his second save and the Padres salvaged a split of an opening, four-game series against the defending NL West champion Dodgers.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RANGERS 12, INDIANS 8

Marlon Byrd and Ian Kinsler hit long home runs and host Texas completed its season-opening series sweep, outslugging Cleveland to start 3-0 for the first time since 1996.

Byrd's homer was a three-run shot that capped a five-run first off Carl Pavano (0-1), making his first start for Cleveland after being a free-agent bust with the Yankees the past four seasons.

YANKEES 11, ORIOLES 2

A.J. Burnett (1-0) allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in his New York debut and fellow newcomers Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher homered to beat Baltimore.

Robinson Cano homered and scored four runs for the Yankees, who avoided their first 0-3 start since 1998.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 3

Matt Garza (1-0) gave up a run on four hits over seven innings and visiting Tampa Bay hit three homers off Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-1) to take two of three in the season-opening series with Boston.

Evan Longoria had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Matt Joyce and Shawn Riggans also homered for the defending AL champions.

ROYALS 2, WHITE SOX 1

Coco Crisp's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie, helping Kansas City take two of three from defending AL Central champion Chicago.

Carlos Quentin led off Chicago's ninth with double against Joakim Soria and scored on Jermaine Dye's groundout. With two outs and two on, Soria struck out pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit.

BLUE JAYS 6, TIGERS 2

Marco Scutaro hit a two-run homer, and Aaron Hill and Adam Lind added solo shots off visiting Detroit's Rick Porcello (0-1), helping Toronto's Ricky Romero (1-0) in a matchup of former first-round draft picks making their major league debuts.

Romero was the No. 6 pick in the 2005 draft, while Porcello was the 27th overall pick in 2007.

MARINERS 2, TWINS 0

Jarrod Washburn (1-0) gave up five hits in eight innings and Adrian Beltre and Rob Johnson had RBI singles to lift visiting Seattle over Minnesota to split the four-game set.

Closer Brandon Morrow, who gave up three runs in the ninth Tuesday in a 6-5 loss, walked Michael Cuddyer to lead off the ninth, but struck out Justin Morneau and Joe Crede looking, then got pinch-hitter Jason Kubel on a flyout to close it out.
