Signs posted after sewage spills into Kanaha Stream
The state Department of Health's Clean Water Branch is advising the public to stay out of Kanaha Stream through the weekend because of a sewage overflow in Papakolea.
Watson Okubo, head of the Clean Water Branch, said in an e-mail that his department was notified yesterday of a 3,000-gallon sewage overflow at 2289 Tantalus Drive.
Okubo said the overflow was caused by roots and grease in the line.
City workers cleared the line and disinfected the area, Okubo said. The area of the spill is on Hawaiian Home Lands property and is the responsibility of the state.
The sewage flowed down a vegetated slope into intermittent Kanaha Stream, Okubo said. Much of the sewage saturated the vegetative slope and percolated into the ground, but warning signs have been posted as a precaution.
