Island women are embracing the accessory of the moment: the scarf.
Maybe it's that last scene in "Slumdog Millionaire," with Freida Pinto dancing on the railroad platform in simple jeans, a white T-shirt — and a bright yellow gauzy scarf. Maybe it's the economic hard times, causing us to seek out an inexpensive accessory rather than a whole new outfit. Or maybe we've figured out that tying on a scarf doesn't have to be complicated.
In this "Scarf 101" story we demonstrate four easy ways to wear a scarf. Trust us; these are styles anyone can manage.
The light, airy scarves that are hot now are especially suited to our tropical climate. They add pizzazz without any weight or heat. We found them in nearly every store we shopped, priced from under $10 to over $500.
Just know that there are dozens more ways to wear a scarf. We love them as a belt, babushka, cummerbund, head wrap or tied around a handbag. A scarf wrapped and tied over a pencil skirt or pair of jeans can create a whole new layered look. We also found some great scarf rings at Nordstrom that make it even easier to style a scarf.
Now, come on, no excuses. Tie one on.
FOUR SIMPLE WAYS TO WEAR A SCARF
Marisa Kellett, from ADR Model & Talent Agency, ties one on with an oblong silk and cotton gauze scarf from Nordstrom ($48).
These looks are most easily achieved with an oblong scarf, but if you have a large square scarf, you can just fold it to make an oblong.
1. The Sophisticate: Hold scarf flat and fold lengthwise. Hold at opposite ends. Tie each end together with a small knot behind the neck. Adjust the hanging corners in front to form a cowl.
2. The Aviator: Drape scarf around the neck. Toss one end over either shoulder. Adjust for comfort.
3. Thread the Needle: Fold scarf in half lengthwise. Drape around the neck, threading the ends through the loop formed at the fold. Wear with the knot in front or at the shoulder with one end hanging down the front, the other down the back.
4. Swept Away: Hold scarf flat and wrap it around the back like a shawl. Leave one end hanging down the front, the other draped across the chest and tossed over the shoulder.
