City to test voice warning systems in Waialua, Haleiwa

Advertiser Staff

The city Department of Emergency Management will test the public address voice capability of two outdoor warning siren systems from 11 a.m. to noon today.

Sirens to be tested are in Waialua at Waialua District Park on the west side of the baseball field and in Haleiwa at the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Cane Haul Road.

This is the second test in a series of tests being conducted to further analyze the effective range of the voice capability of the Waialua and Haleiwa systems. This new equipment is designed to transmit voice messages from the City's Emergency Operations Center in Honolulu.

DEM Disaster Reserve Volunteers as well as community members will assist by monitoring this test from various locations in Waialua and Haleiwa.

Residents and businesses in the surrounding communities may hear a series of chimes, followed by public address voice messages during the testing period.

Hawaii State Civil Defense provides the money to purchase and install the voice-capable sirens. Once installed, they are released to the city for monthly testing and emergency activation.
