Standup paddlers to pick up trash along ocean route

Volunteers will pick up trash Saturday from Maunalua Bay Beach Park to Wai'alae Beach Park — while standup paddling.

Organizers will equip paddlers with a custom utility belt to store trash on the four-mile route.

The paddlers pick up the trash with their paddles.

Some 50 paddlers are expected to participate.

"We want to make the point that the ocean is not a dumping ground, and we are focusing on this bay because it's a treasure that is in trouble and needs our kokua," said Alika Winter, Malama Maunalua Makai Watch coordinator.

The event starts at 9 a.m. at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Participants are asked to gather at 8 a.m. at the Pinky Thompson Canoe Halau.
