BYUH soccer wins, 4-1

Sarah Welty scored two goals as the Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's soccer team opened defense of its Pacific West Conference title with a 4-1 victory over Grand Canyon yesterday at Phoenix, Ariz.

Margaret Sekona and Natalie Cude also scored for the Seasiders (5-1, 1-0). Angela Russell scored in the 81st minute to help the Antelopes (1-5-1, 0-1) avoid a shutout by BYUH goalies Becky Ploeger and Scottie Prince.

The Seasiders dominated the first half, outshooting Grand Canyon 9-2 and scoring on Sekona's goal just 13 seconds into the game, Cude's goal in the 14th minute off Ashley Hunter's corner kick, and Welty's goal in the 42nd minute on Cude's assist.

Welty put a nice move on a defender after taking a pass into the box from Kacey Williams and scored her second goal at the 75:39 mark to make it 4-0.

Also yesterday:

Andrew Bailey scored two goals as PacWest defending champion Grand Canyon beat BYUH, 3-0, in a men's match at Phoenix, Ariz. Grand Canyon is 1-3-2 and 1-0. BYUH, which outshot Grand Canyon 15-11, fell to 2-5 and 0-1.

Arturo Gomez scored two goals as Notre Dame de Namur defeated Chaminade, 5-0, in a men's match at Belmont, Calif. Kris Lounsbury made 10 saves for the Silverswords (1-6-1), who played the Argos (4-2-1) to a scoreless tie at the half.

Notre Dame de Namur scored two goals in the first 15 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory over Chaminade in a women's match at Belmont, Calif. Marissa Minor made eight saves for the Silverswords (1-3). The Argos are 3-5.

HAWAI'I WIPES OUT

The Hawai'i contingent in the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest was eliminated yesterday.

The third round of the weeklong contest was run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Fred Patacchia Jr., Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan all lost their respective heats yesterday.

Sullivan was eliminated when Australia's Luke Stedman caught a wave in the closing seconds of the heat. The final score was 12.56-12.50.

Kaua'i brothers Andy and Bruce Irons were eliminated earlier in the week.

Florida's Kelly Slater won his third-round heat, and has a mathematical shot at clinching the 2008 world championship if he wins the contest.

CHAMINADE PREVAILS

Samantha Miller had 20 kills and 10 digs, and Tanya Alvino added 38 assists and 13 digs as Chaminade defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 26-28, 25-13, 25-22, 25-19, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at McCabe gym.

Trina Kauliakamoa added 15 kills and 17 digs, and Chauntelle Maduli contributed 18 digs for the Silverswords (6-6, 2-1).

Christina Villamayor led the Argos (1-15) with 14 kills.
