Endurance athlete Vi Jones-Medusky and artist Peggy Chun hope to raise awareness about the paralyzing ailment both are fighting — amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease — through a 4-mile run-walk Oct. 18 through Kualoa Ranch.

Runners and walkers are invited to participate. Participants will receive a T-shirt emblazoned with an original Peggy Chun artwork.

Participants will make their way around a looping course along jeep roads and cow pastures through the lush valley. There will be a freshwater stream crossing and single-track trail to the finish with scenic ocean views.

The race is limited to 280 participants of all ages and abilities.

Jones-Medusky finished several marathons, Ironman triathlons and ultramarathons before she was diagnosed in 2004. She hopes to use a wheelchair to navigate the course.

Chun, a well-known Hawai'i watercolorist, was diagnosed in 2002. She is bedridden and 100 percent dependent on a ventilator, so she will not be able to attend.

The deadline for registration and the $18 fee is tomorrow.
