Sewage spill quicky contained in Moanalua

Quick work by a city Department of Environmental Services crew prevented 1,125 gallons of raw sewage which spilled out of a manhole and into a storm drain today from reaching Moanalua Stream.
Environmental Services spokesman Markus Owens said the workers responded to the 1:39 p.m. spill at 1677 Ala Aolani in 13 minutes and had the site secured at 2:28 p.m. The crew went down the road to intercept the sewage before it could reach Moanalua Stream, Owens said.
The spill was caused by roots clogging an 8-inch vitrified clay pipe, according to Owens.
The crew cleaned and deodorized the affected area near the manhole and storm drain. The state Department of Health was notified and as a precautionary measure, signs were posted notifying the public of the spill.
