KILAUEA, Kaua'i – A coordinated search by rescue personnel for an 80-year-old Kilauea man missing since yesterday began early this morning.

The Coast Guard started its aerial and water search for Robert Nakashima Sr. at around 4 am, while the Kaua'i Fire Department's Air-1 and rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station began searching from the air at first light.

The rescue specialists found Nakashima's fishing bag at Makapili Point near Secret Beach in Kilauea.

Zodiac-1 was launched for shoreline and water searches about 8:30 a.m.

Nakashima reportedly went fishing alone early yesterday morning at Rock Quarry Beach in Kilauea.

Family and friends became concerned when Nakashima didn't return home by the late afternoon. They set out to find him, but were able only to locate his pick-up truck.

They contacted police dispatch, which in turn contacted the Hanalei sub-station. A police officer and Hanalei fire fighters responded to the call.

Due to darkness setting in making it hazardous to conduct a search in the area, the decision was made to begin searching for Nakashima at first light today.
