Maui's Arnoult wins doubles match, loses singles at Paralympics

The U.S. team of Beth Arnoult and partner Kaitlyn Verfuerth advanced in women's wheelchair tennis doubles at the Paralympics on Thursday, defeating Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, in Beijing.

Their quarterfinal win on Thursday lasted 2 hours and 31 minutes.

Arnoult, a 42-year-old from Pa'ia, Maui and seeded fourth in doubles with Verfuerth, will face top-seeded Jiske Griffioen and Esther Vergeer of the Netherlands in Saturday's semifinals. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams also advanced to the semifinals.

Earlier Thursday, No. 20 Arnoult lost to No. 4 Griffioen of the Netherlands in a quarterfinal singles match. Griffioen won 6-3, 6-0 in a match that lasted 51 minutes.

Arnoult is competing in her first Paralympics and plans on retiring after the event.
