High surf advisory issued for south-facing shores

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for south-facing shores on all islands from noon today through Sunday.

A powerful low-pressure system in the South Pacific last week generated large open ocean swells that are expected to roll into Hawaii waters through the weekend, forecasters said.

The swell is expected to continue building through Friday, with surf along south-facing shores exceeding advisory level heights of 8 feet by Thursday afternoon.

The surf is expect to remain higher than normal through the weekend.

Elsewhere, surf along west-facing shores will increase to heights of 3 to 5 feet this morning, increasing further to heights of 5 to 8 feet by this afternoon and 6 to 10 feet later tonight.

Surf along north-facing shores will lower to heights of 2 feet or less today, while surf along east-facing shores will diminish to heights of 1 to 3 feet.

Outlook through Tuesday, Sept. 9: Surf will likely drop below advisory level by Sunday afternoon.
