OIA powerhouses clash in semifinals

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Western Division football foes Leilehua and Wai'anae are a win away from a rematch of last year's O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red championship.

The No. 3 and defending champion Mules (7-1) will play No. 5 Farrington (7-2) at 4:30 p.m., while No. 4 Kahuku (8-1) will take on the No. 8 Seariders (4-4) at 7:30 p.m. in semifinals today at Aloha Stadium.

The winners advance to the title game Nov. 7 at Aloha Stadium and earn Division I state tournament berths. The losers will play for third place Nov. 8 at a site to be determined for the OIA's third and final state berth.

Last year, the Mules beat the Governors, 7-3, in the semifinals en route to the championship against the Seariders.

WAI'ANAE VS. KAHUKU

The Red Raiders and Seariders haven't met since the 2006 championship, won by Kahuku, 7-0.

"Wai'anae-Kahuku is a tradition," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "It's always a battle."

Kahuku is hot, having won eight in a row since a 35-0 loss to No. 6 Kamehameha in the Aug. 15 nonleague opener. Kahuku eliminated Mililani, 37-20, in last week's quarterfinals, while the Seariders snapped a two-game skid in another quarterfinal with a 25-13 win against Castle.

Despite the win, Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said his team still needs to play better.

"It wasn't a comfortable win," Matsumoto said. "Execution-wise, we were poor. We had seven interceptions, yet the score was only 25-13, so we didn't capitalize on all the turnovers. We're struggling."

Offensively for Kahuku, running back St. John Lessary is the workhorse with 97 carries for 575 yards and six TDs. He also has a TD reception and 30 points from 24 PATs and two field goals. He also returns kickoffs.

Like the Red Raiders, the Seariders have their own scoring machine in RB Danny Kekoanui (152 for 802 yards, 10 TDs and 13 receptions for 162 yards, 1 TD).

Torres said one area his team has to control is the line of scrimmage. But the Red Raiders will be without junior DL Kona Schwenke (6-4, 203), who already has an offer from Brigham Young.

FARRINGTON VS. LEILEHUA

The Mules' high-powered offense, which accounted for 253 of the team's 265 points to lead all Red teams, will face an equally strong Governors defense. Farrington's opponents have scored 90 points, the fewest allowed by a Red team. Only twice have the Govs allowed 20 or more points.

"They'll be just as tough again," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. "They bring it for four quarters."

And it's a relatively young defense with just four seniors, Govs coach Randall Okimoto said.

"Basically, it's been their dedication in the off-season," Okimoto said. "They work well with each other. That's been the difference."

Leilehua's offensive line is young and not healthy. Expect to see some defensive players, such as linemen Brad Iaulualo, Nate Hall, Zach Coffin and Sione Sami rotate on the O-line or as extra-blocking fullbacks.

Okimoto said the teams should combine for more than last year's 10 points because the offensive personnel are more experienced.

Mules' QB Andrew Manley has a full season under his belt and All-State players Rico Newman (SB/RB/P) and Edieson Dumlao (WR) join him.

Farrington's Apelu So'oalo is a scoring threat with 704 yards rushing and seven field goals.
