40 teams in Pro-Scratch event

Advertiser Staff

The field is full with 40 teams for next week's eighth annual Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship. The tournament, which features one pro and one amateur "scratch" golfer on a team, will be played at Pearl Country Club.

Play begins at 11:10 a.m. Monday with a two-man scramble format. Tuesday's final round, which begins at 6:37 a.m., is a best-ball format.

Teams include: Defending champions, and cousins, Regan Lee and Brandan Kop; Oahu Country Club members Dave Eichelberger — who plays on the Champions Tour — and Gary Kong; brothers Norman-Ganin and Kellen-Floyd Asao; father and son Lance and Nate Suzuki; two-time champions Kevin Hayashi and Elton Tanaka; and Kellan Anderson and Troy Higashiyama, who set the tournament record of 23-under-par 121 two years ago.

Professionals are playing for $10,000 and amateurs for $4,000 in merchandise certificates.

VICTORINO ON MAUI

Maui's Shane Victorino will bring a few of his World Series champion teammates from the Philadelphia Phillies when he hosts a charity golf tournament Nov. 22 at Makena's North Course.

ESPN anchor Neil Everett, a former KGMB anchor, will emcee the event.

Victorino, the Phillies center fielder, is a former St. Anthony star who became a pivotal player in the Phillies' success this season. The golf tournament will feature athletes, sports personalities and entertainers. Kurt Suzuki of the Oakland A's, also from Maui, is expected to play. They will be teamed with foursomes of amateurs. The event has a noon shotgun start.

The event — "Shane Victorino's A Round to Remember" — will raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association Aloha Chapter. For information, contact Josh Goldberg at (310) 858-1872 or via-email at joshg@bhscouncil.com.

IVERSON CLAIMS CUP

Neal Iverson claimed the 2008 Ali'i Cup last weekend at Kona Country Club, defeating Peter Liljeholm, 2 and 1, in the final on the Ocean Course.

The tournament was played through heavy rains, particularly in the morning when Iverson needed extra holes in his semifinal match with Wayne Brumaghim. Iverson prevailed on the 20th to reach the finals. Liljeholm beat Greg Larson, 4 and 2.

Tandy Kualii, last year's Ali'i Cup champion, won the Senior Division with a 4-and-3 victory over Milton Alcos. Pat McGinnis took the Golden Senior division title, 1-up over Jim Sheeley. Honsador was tournament sponsor.

HAWAI'I-JAPAN JR. CUP

Entries are being accepted for the second annual USA Hawai'i-Japan Junior Cup Junior-Am, Nov. 16, at Waikoloa Kings' Course on the Big Island. The event will match amateurs with 44 of the top juniors from Hawai'i and Japan.

Hawai'i's team includes Kimberly Kim and David Fink, who have verbally committed to play for Oklahoma State and Oregon State in the fall. Also playing are Cassy Isagawa, Bradley Shigezawa, Alina Ching, Taeksoo Kim, Kristina Merkle, Henry Park and Cyd Okino.

Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society Big Island Chapter, Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association, Japan High School Golf Association and Waikoloa Foundation.

Entry fee of $300 per amateur ($150 tax deductible) includes all golf, food and beverages, including a tournament dinner at Kings' Grille, along with tee gifts and prizes. The Junior-Am starts at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Johnny Eusebio at 808-886-6060 or jeusebio@waikoloaland.com.
